Tools and Hardware Reviews of Panasonic NI-L45NR Cordless Iron

Customer Review: How good could an iron be? Here's your answer. If you just HAD TO have a Dyson, then you have to have this too.
Summary: 5 Stars

If you think that roughly $60 is too much to pay for an iron, you're wrong. This is worth every penny.

Just like the Dyson vacuum, this is not some gimmicky innovation that actually doesn't work any better than something half the price.

Before this, I bought what I thought was the best iron ever--a Hamilton Beach, with all the bells and whistles. Like all irons--I thought at the time--it leaked and dripped a bit, but was all around the best I ever used. It wasn't the best my wife (who is from Japan) ever used though, and even though I didn't believe it was actually worth the cost for whatever small margin of difference, I decided to get her what she wanted.

Glad I did.

It wont burn your clothes even if you leave it sitting on them; the steam is plentiful, steady, and constant; you can remove and refill the tank while the iron is on--no problem; and though there is no power in the iron itself, it heats up, does a great job from start to finish.

The carrying case/cover snaps right on and stays there as you carry it around, and you don't have to wait for the iron to cool completely before closing it up.

BOTTOM LINE: Hands down, perfect iron. Makes the task of ironing even by someone like myself who isn't very good at it, relatively easy. I'd recommend it as a going away present for your college bound children, and expect to see it decades later, still in use. It's really that good.

In fact, this is such a good iron that I'm sure anyone--even us manly men who had become accustomed to cleaning and such exactly 'once per girlfriend' prior to marriage--would be happy to have. I'd even recommend it as a Christmas or birthday present (same as I would a Dyson vacuum or Komachi knife set).

Great stuff.

Customer Review: Beats Rowenta by a mile
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Rowenta cordless/corded iron for many years. The reason I tolerated the leaking, which didn't happen right away, was because cordless irons weren't on every corner. Once you have one, you're hooked ("I've seen Paree; I can't go back to the farm"). In fact, when I began searching online for a new iron (the dial broke), I never even saw a Rowenta cordless. Presumably, instead of resolving their iron's major H2O issue, they discontinued it.

I bought the Panasonic on the strength of the reviews, and I'm simply delighted. It arrived sooner than stated, so I only had to use the corded (ugh) backup for a couple weeks instead of months. It's smaller, lighter in weight, and a cool purple. I especially like the non-stick surface that will never look mottled like the other one and will be easy to clean as well. There's the option to remove the reservoir so I won't saturate the ironing board again. Adjusting the temperature is much better than a dial, plus I can tell when the Panasonic is off. The Rowenta lacked this word, who knows why? Best of all - IT DOESN'T LEAK.

Two nits, and they're mine, not Panasonic's. The Rowenta could be used corded. Occasionally, I needed that flexibility and will keep the backup for those times. It won't kill me. The Rowenta didn't have auto shutoff, which for a seamstress is a boon to be able to sew/press/sew/press without needing a heatup. I realize it's a safety feature for which I should be grateful, and I am. I just became accustomed to no break in the sewing process and truly did check it before I left. It won't kill me to wait or move the iron every so often to keep it drawing power. These slight nuisances don't outweigh all the positives.

I love this little iron.

Customer Review: Cordless, but no batteries
Summary: 5 Stars

This iron has three features that make it great:

First, its cordless. Not having a cord to get in the way makes ironing much faster and easier.

Second, it has a detachable water container, so when you need to refill the water, you don't have to carry the iron to the faucet (or carry water in a cup to the iron). You can simply detach the water container and fill it at your leisure.

Third, it has a base unit, which makes for a convenient place to set the iron while you are adjusting your clothes.

When I bought the iron, I just assumed that this product was a battery operated product that would heat itself using power stored in a battery inside the unit. Not so.

Instead, power is supplied by a base unit which you put the put the iron on. When you want to use the iron, you turn it on and the base unit supplies power to the iron and heats it up. Then, you remove the iron from the base and do your ironing. Panasonic says that the iron will eventually cool down if it is off the base for long enough, so you should put it back onto the base in between passes to let it heat back up.

I found that the unit maintains its heat very well and for a long time, so there was absolutely no problem with having enough heat to iron, and using the base unit was a real convenience.

Panasonic's manual states that most people iron for eleven seconds and then adjust their clothes for about 8 seconds. Thus, Panasonic theorizes that this cycle will be no problem and I agree: Whenever you ordinarily set the iron on your ironing board to adjust your clothes, you instead set the iron on your base (which is also on your ironing board).

All in all, another great convenience product from Panasonic.

Customer Review: A really good steam iron
Summary: 5 Stars

I iron on demand. For the most part, I iron things when I need them. I need an iron that is quick, easy and convenient. This one does the job admirably.

The "steam" part of steam irons typically fails first and soon. They either stop working altogether or drip, or drop dirty water on the clothes. So I waited about a year before writing this review. So far everything is working fine. I would estimate that it is more reliable than most.

A few reviewers have commented on the convenience of the removable water tank. I have never bothered to remove it, because, without a cord, it is just as easy to take the whole iron to the water source as the tank.

For me, the thing that takes the most time when ironing, is adjusting and re-adjusting the clothing on the board. This is usually complicated by a cord dragging over everything and disrupting it. Another small time waster is making sure that the iron is stable every time you put it down to re-arrange the clothing. It is a very small extra amount of time, but it adds up, because it happens so frequently.

This iron has neither of those problems. There is no cord and it has a very stable base to drop it into every few seconds. It maintains its heat very well.

The iron only has three temperature settings, but they are accurately maintained and, in practice, I don't find I need any more.

It only has a few steam holes, but again, in practice, it works fine.

The only minor negative is that the first time you lift the iron from its base, it does not produce any steam. It only starts producing steam from the second time you lift it from its base.

Customer Review: Incredible Iron
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first iron in many years. I did the research and found this iron to be rated very high by users. After using it myself, I can understand why. It's easy to use and operate and it stores in its own carrying case. Being a guy who has never done much ironing, I found this iron to be amazingly easy to use. It has digital settings (only 3) for heat control. The water tank comes out for easy refilling. The cord pulls out and retracts into its chamber so it stays out of the way. The iron is cordless so no worries about getting tangled in the power cord and being cordless makes it so much easier to iron. The iron is lightweight and the size is a nice medium size- not too big, not too small for any ironing job. The steam is powerful and took care of all wrinkles. And, it only took a few minutes to heat and be ready to do its job. And it stores itself in its own carrying case- which is compact and easy to store away when the job is done. Being cordless does not mean that there is a battery in the iron to recharge to keep it hot while ironing. How it works: You plug in the base (where the iron rests for storage and during non-ironing) while the iron rests on the base and this initially heats the iron. Then, in between ironing (while moving the shirt around on the ironing board) it quickly re-heats it and keeps it hot. There have been several times where I ironed for 1 hour or more and the iron stayed plenty hot. And, you must return it to its base to re-heat even if for a few seconds when you move clothes around. Whether you're ironing for 5 mins or 5 hours, this is a sweet iron.
