Tools and Hardware Reviews of Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel SoleplateCustomer Review: Stainless Steel is still the best. Summary: 5 Stars
Wife has an Italian made shade lamp, 25 years old she brought with her. Never seen a lamp like this before, a special material 3 feet wide by ten feet tall with rollers on the top and bottom and a bracket affair that sits in the center with a spotlight on it. Was my job to restore it to new condition.
Won't get into converting this lamp to US standards, adding a touch dimmer, sanding and painting and all that, my challenge was to wash and clean that shade with 25 years of dust on it and to iron it. I had a Panasonic Telfon iron, not that old, but the Telfon was falling off and the steam holes were partially blocked spraying out chunks of water.
I purchased this iron with the very price anywhere from Amazon just for this job. She was concerned about me burning her shade, just told her to leave the room, it did an excellent job and her shade looked like new again. I like the retractable cord and the removable tank, but only use distilled water in it.
She was extremely pleased to see her precious shade lamp installed in her sitting room, but thought I was foolish to buy an iron just for this job. Hey, a man needs the right tool for the job. Offered to give it to her, said she needs Telfon, think she is brainwashed. So I cleaned it up, and packed it up in the box, this was like nine months ago.
Just yesterday, she asked me if she could use it for a new special dress, said sure, I am not hard to get along with, you can use any of my tools, LOL. She really loved it as well, that stainless runs so smooth and doesn't chip nor plug up the steam holes. But if it does, it can be cleaned. With the older Teflon coated iron, rust appears under the chips.
My only wish is that the control was more accessible, my big hands barely fit in there, yes, I was playing with that to be assured I would not burn her shade.
I hate Teflon, Ford and GM was using it in their vehicle air conditioning compressors, would chip and cause black death, falls off pots and pans and you end up eating it, and the same with the iron, more disadvantages than advantages. Stainless was used for years, and still is the best, even for an iron.
Customer Review: Panasonic Still Makes Great Irons but Why no Teflon-Coated Soleplate? Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this iron to replace the Panasonic NI-531R 1000W iron which I bought when I was still living in a college dorm way back in 1999. Needless to say that was one tough iron that saw some heavy use, and abuse, over its 12-year lifespan. The NI-C78SR has virtually the same identical design and features as well as a few upgrades.
Identical features:
- Same sleek shape for easy maneuvering while ironing
- Spray mist
- Pushbutton Steam/Dry Selector
- 3-way auto shut-off in case you "accidentally" forget to turn it off or tip it to its side
- See-through detachable water tank so there's no guessing how much water there is left.
- Automatic retractable cord reel. One of the best if not the best feature of Panasonic irons, push-button cord reel so there's no need for manual coiling of the electric cord. Eliminates the loose cord hassle.
New features:
- Vertical steam so you can steam while iron is in upright position
- Anti-calcium system. I only use distilled water so this doesn't help me much but it's great to have.
- Detachable water tank. I never detach the tank to fill up as I only use bottled, distilled water so this feature may be useful but not for me.
- Jet-of-Steam to get stubborn wrinkles out
- Adjustable steam
- All-temperature steam so the steam feature may be used for all temperature settings
Cons: the only gripe I have is this model has a stainless steel soleplate while the other, less expensive models, in this line all have non-stick coated soleplates. The stainless steel scratched on the very first use and does not glide as easily as the Teflon-coated soleplate of my 12-year old iron. (I'm not certain whether the "non-stick" of the current Panasonic irons is still Teflon or not) I'm still having a hard time figuring out why the most expensive model in this line would lack the Teflon coating.
All in all I expect this Panasonic NI-C78SR iron to last until about 2022 or so :)
Customer Review: The Iron You Wish Everyone Had Summary: 5 Stars
This iron is so superior to other irons that you might find yourself using a friend's, or the complimentary one at a hotel, and wishing that you had your Panasonic iron instead. Seriously. I'm very picky, and I'm not getting paid, and I'm saying this. About an iron.
The first and foremost thing that makes this iron great: the detachable water tank. No more trying to fit the entire iron in the sink, and getting water dribbled over everything when aiming for the fill hole. This feature makes this iron worth purchasing alone. Press the white button, it pops off, fill it, snap it back in, bada boom. It doesn't accidentally come off mid-ironing and it doesn't leak. How does it work? I have no idea.
Second thing: it gets really hot and gets wrinkles out of everything. I had a small Rowenta travel iron before, so perhaps I'm not used to this much power, but I was definitely impressed with the ironing ability of this unit. No wrinkles at all. Related to the power of this iron: the vertical steamer actually WORKS. I have these knit drapey tops that get folded and put in a dresser when I'm out of hangers, and before going out, I can confidently pull one from the drawer, steam it while it's hanging from a chair, and you couldn't even tell it was just wadded up under a couple pairs of jeans. The steamer doesn't leak either: no water spots!
The only complaint about this iron I have, which you may never have to deal with, is that it automatically shuts off after 15 minutes and you have to "reset" it by unplugging it. I use this iron when sewing, so if I press my fabric, sew it, and perhaps I mess up something and take a long time getting the stitches out, I'll have to unplug the iron, then plug it back in, and let it heat up again before pressing the seam. It can get annoying, but I don't sew very often, so I tolerate this.
So that's it. I've had my iron for a year and I love it. If it breaks, I'm getting the same model. Perfect size, weight, and damn good at ironing.
Customer Review: Replaced my Rowenta & can't believe I'm still happy with a Panasonic.. Summary: 5 Stars
Initially, I was nervous about replacing my Rowenta. As a former seamstress and sewing teacher, I was madly in love with the Rowenta company for years. However, in recent years, like others, I discovered that Rowenta irons are simply NOT the same iron as in years past. The quality is missing and I think company pride was lost somewhere along the way.
I always paid a good price for an iron, never under $100. I needed a dependable iron with good steaming function and was glad to pay for one that would last me years. However, when my last Rowenta died, I decided that since I was no longer totally involved in the sewing profession, I would settle for a decent iron with a lower price tag.
I depended on the Amazon.com reviews and was quite nervous when I decided to buy this Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry iron. I figured that at only $35 and free shipping, if it died in a couple of months, I wouldn't be out much anyway. I can't believe this iron! Even overnight guests that used it, commented on the steaming and good press that this iron gave their clothing.
PROS: NICE steam -flat or vertical, detachable water tank, stainless steel soleplate, auto shut-off, retractable cord and more. GREAT PRICE.
CONS: Only 1. I would love it if the water tank didn't have to be filled so frequently (compared to other irons I've owned). I keep a sports water bottle nearby to fill quickly.
I've owned this iron 5 months now and I still give this iron 5 stars because of all the PROS.
Customer Review: Thought I'd Lost My Touch Summary: 5 Stars
When my very expensive iron stopped working a while back, I starting searching on Amazon for a replacement. This Panasonic had great reviews at a great price.
I'd been having problems with creases in my clothing when ironing backwards because fabric was getting caught in the soleplate. Since it was such an expensive iron, I blamed myself. Well, it wasn't me! This iron has the smoothest soleplate of any iron I've ever owned. It actually makes ironing fun (if you can believe that!).
I love the removable water reservoir. I'd had problems with my old iron when a vacuum would form in the reservoir as I was filling it, and water would run all over the iron.
The retractable cord is nice, too -- just make sure you read the directions, since the button for it isn't obvious. (It's at the bottom of the handle.) I'm right-handed, so the cord position is not a problem for me.
Temperature settings seem accurate, the steam and spray buttons are easy to use and well-marked, and there are three settings for continuous steam (off, low, high).
I find the temperature button a little difficult to turn because there isn't much clearance between it and the handle, but that certainly does not take away a star. Also, the water reservoir button is located a little close to my index finger -- it's just a tiny bit annoying.
Bottom line...try this before investing in one of those expensive irons and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
