As a child, my wife actually used an iron made of iron that she filled with hot coals to heat it. Since then she has been through a bunch of cheap electric ones that leaked, clogged up, didn't steam well, had sticky sole plates and the last one featured a cord that got so hot it would burn her arm. Whine, whine, whine. Enough. So I thought, being her birthday or whatever, that I would get her an iron.
I looked at the expensive brands. I was surprised by the negative reviews. Can't buy one of those, thankfully. Happily, the Panasonic NI-C8SR (people get paid for naming these things?) did better review-wise despite costing much less.
It was impressive coming right out of the box, bright sparkly colors and a style that looked like a Formula One race car. The plastic has a quality look and it all fits together in a way that suggests it was thoughtfully designed. It is not as heavy as a real iron filled with coals, but it seems about right and suggests that it has some quality and will crush wrinkles flat without having to bear down.
My wife, thrilled at her gift, told me I should iron something and picked out my Mexican party shirt, complex and made of linen that she said was nearly impossible to iron and which has remained untouched, wadded into the "to iron" pile of forgotten clothing for three years.
Easy to figure out and set the temperature, the tank detaches and fills nicely and without leaks, the cord reel worked and so I went to work. She is right, that linen stuff is tough. I am an amateur ironer at best, but after playing with the steam to get lots of it, the shirt is now very nice, waiting to get margaritas spilled on it once again.
It glides nicely, has enough of a point on it to get into the details, has various steam options that work and is quite nice to use. I didn't think it was too heavy at all. The iron gets stashed away by the unironed shirts, so the retractable cord works well. It is surprising that they made it right-handed and while learning to iron other-handed isn't hard, it is still surprising that the cord exit isn't on a pivot. For right-handed users, the cord coming out the side is better than having it come straight out the back. Also, the cord is evidently of a heavy enough gauge to not get hot.
Stashed on its end, the iron is a touch wobbly on a soft ironing board, but fine on a hard surface. You could put a little trivet or cutting board down to create a more stable surface.
The iron has provisions to allow it to survive tap water, but not soft water or very hard water. You can go through a process of cleaning it after each use that undoubtedly works well, but my wife would never do all that so I think distilled water is the way to go and is cheaper than coal.
You can still buy coal-fired irons that will last for a hundred years, so if this iron dies an early death I will not be happy and will angrily edit this review. But, so far it has been a good choice, seemingly better than competing irons carried in box stores.
Got to give it all five stars.
