I was told about these tools by the repair center that was repairing my Ridgid drill for the second time and my Ridgid recip saw for the first time.
I said Panasonic makes tools? Indeed they do.
I decided to try them and I am very pleased with them. I have had the DeWalt 18volt series and they are great, but, the batteries are a constant battle to keep one with a charge. I was constantly using the charger.
I tried Ridgid with the lifetime guarantee and all. Its a good thing they have the guarantee because you are going to need it. I sent my drill in and the service became a battle between the authorized service center and the Ridgid company. After 5 months of waiting and numerous phone calls, I received a new drill. Only thing was it had only one speed. Oh well, I wasn't using the tools anymore anyway. Then about 3 weeks later another drill was sent to me with the variable speed but the chuck was very weak. LOL Yes it became a joke with my brother and myself.
In the meantime I purchased and was using the Panasonic set. I was very pleased with the very long run time I had. Where I was charging batteries several times a day with Ridgid and De Walt, I am now charging maybe several times a week. The tools are strong and very well built.
Recently, the battery charger quit. This is after a little over a year. I looked for a fuse to check, but, found no way to open the unit. I called the customer service and they said that the unit was unservicable,that there was no fuse and that I would have to buy a new one at $120.00. I was not happy. I then went down to the work area in my basement and started to find a way to open the unit. It turns out that I had no tools to open it with. Not allen, torx, phillips or slot. I tried every thing I could. NO LUCK. I used a magnifying glass to see what it was and it looked like torx.
That is when I took the whole unit and smashed the thing on the ground. Nothing happened. HUH! Smashed it again and again and again, and a small crack started. Finally after some serious smashing,LOL, I got the thing open to the point that I could see that there was a fuse and indeed it had blown. So much for customer service. Upon inspection, I was very impressed with the extremely well built unit. Inside there was liberal use of some kind of silicone or epoxy to hold parts in place. The circuit board was of very high quality as were the componets. I was so impressed that I decided to keep the set and purchase a new charger.
I was ready to get the new Makita LiIon or the De Walt 26 volt set. Not anymore. I will stick with this set until ??????
Also, as it turned out, the 4 small screws are some kind of a torx security screw. It is a torx pattern with a tiny post in the middle of the star pattern. You would need a torx with a hole in the middle to fit the screw head pattern. In the future, I will use my Dremel and cut the screws off and use my own.
Again, great tools and they live up to everyday use in all kinds of cutting, drilling, sawing(metal or wood). Long battery life and strong.
Case a little bulky, but, no big deal, better than a bag that is always open and getting crap inside or wet.
I find it strange that you never hear of these great tools in the trades or in the box stores. Even in the specialty stores they are very rare.
The only other thing besides the bulky case is the fact that you have to buy the proprietary circular blades. I am thinking that I will have the arbor spacer machined to take the common blades in the future.
